Update October 2002

Just before it got cold, I decided to mount the receiver on my roof or as high as I could get it. There was no place inside I could mount it where it would get a continuous signal. I recently changed all my windows and the coating they have blocks the GPS signal so that eliminated a window sill location. The outside position is on the edge of a balcony. It gets about 3/4 of the sky down to an altitude of 10-15 degrees. The only worry I had was weather proofing the system. That turned out to be the easy part. Finding a fifty foot serial cable was the hard part. I finally made one myself from eight wire cat 5 network cable.

To mount the receiver, I used a hard plastic sandwich container with a snap on top. I cut a hole in the side to feed the cable through and sealed it up with silicone. I attached the top of the container to the roof with silicone. When this set, I placed the receiver on the top and snapped the container onto the top. The GPS receiver was inside the container and protected from the elements but still had a clear view of the sky.
